Weather Vane Ornaments- An Informative Article on the Different Types of Weather Vane Ornaments

By Neisha Bjorklund A weathervane is a historic outdoor home accessory which embellishes rooftops all over the world. There are many different kinds of weathervanes which were created many, many years ago. These weathervanes can display many different kinds of ornaments as well. ARROW AND SCROLL WEATHERVANE ORNAMENTS- These ornaments are a basic arrow ornament, a point and fletching attached to a horizontal tube. Sometimes the term “arrow” and the term “scroll” are interchangeable. This depends on the type of fletching, whether there is a point on it and what type of point it is, how intricate the details are, and whether the design contains any actual wrought scrolls. BANNER AND BANNERET WEATHERVANE ORNAMENTS- These ornaments are derived from medieval pennants and flags, the basic parts of this particular ornament are the points in front and a flat area in the back. Though the terms “banner” and “banneret” also seem to be interchangeable, a banner usually has an area large enough for a date or monogram to be pierced (cut out) or applied to the ornament, while a banneret has an area which might be large but is mainly decorative. SILHOUETTE WEATHERVANE ORNAMENTS- This style ornament has also been in use for many, many years. In Europe, businesses and guilds would display their specialty using this type of vane ornament. In the old and new worlds, many farmers would carve a simple figure into a piece of wood and use this as a wind indicator on their barns. After 1900, the silhouette weathervane became very popular again, and often displayed fables, sporting events or themes. SWELL-BODIED WEATHERVANE ORNAMENTS- This is the weathervane ornament which is most closely associated with the American weather vane makers. Molds are created from hammered copper for these ornaments. The molds are then trimmed and soldered together into a hollow form which is a few inches thick. This type of vane can also be formed freehand. FULL-BODIED WEATHERVANE ORNAMENTS- These ornaments are a 3-dimensional representation of a particular subject. Philadelphia Holistic Dentists

By Ross Bainbridge Philadelphia holistic dentists incorporate safe alternate methods into traditional dentistry to ensure dental health. Holistic dentistry promotes a preventative approach to dentistry and combines basic dental knowledge with procedures from a variety of medical systems. Holistic dentistry is also called alternative or biological dentistry. The holistic dentist performs a detailed analysis to identify the cause for the disease before prescribing treatment. Holistic dentists focus on the overall health of the patient. They relate dental problems such as cavities, infections, root canals, and misalignments of the teeth or jaw with far-reaching effects throughout the body. Philadelphia holistic dentists treat common dental problems such as tooth decay, tooth disease, and tooth loss with special holistic techniques. They take adequate measures to avoid the spread of the disease to other parts of the body. Holistic dentists use a practice known as orthopedic orthodontics for teeth straightening in which, the muscles of the patient’s face and the patient’s head and neck are properly aligned. The treatment of dental problems is comprehensive with solutions to problems that may affect the patient’s jaw, head, neck, and spine. They utilize a personalized health improvement program called contract reflex analysis for diagnosing the effects of the problem. They promote safer dental methods with the use of nontoxic restoration materials for dental work. They avoid mercury since they feel that mercury has a negative effect on the nervous and immune systems. Acupuncture anesthesia is the popular method of anesthesia in holistic dentistry. Holistic dentists consider dental distress as a consequence of malocclusion, postural imbalances, and improper jaw relationships. The other reasons include environmental and occupational hazards, improper diet, and lack of exercise, lack of sleep, toxic chemicals, and emotional stress. Naturopathic Degrees

By Michael Bustamante Naturopathic Degrees can be earned through leading naturopathic colleges, a number of Oriental Medicine Schools, and other healing arts schools. While the field of naturopathy is a noninvasive and an alternative medicine, it is commonly used in conjunction with traditional medicine as a complementary treatment. Because of this, more and more prospective students are beginning to explore the educational possibilities of attaining Naturopathic Degrees. The potential for students to attain their Naturopathic Degrees through a number of correspondence schools and online learning schools also exists; however, it is in the student’s best interest to determine the legitimacy of these degree programs and whether or not these earned Naturopathic Degrees will be considered sufficient for licensure in naturopathy. While some accredited natural healing colleges and universities vary in the precise titling of Naturopathic Degrees, the two basic degree programs, “Doctor of Naturopathy” and “Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine” are both one in the same. Both are commonly abbreviated with “N.D.” The exception to the rule of Naturopathic Degrees is in Canada, where Doctors of Naturopathic Medicine are awarded with a diploma, as opposed to a degree. Naturopathic Degrees may be achieved upon successful completion of a rigorous academic program in natural health medicine. The curriculum may include such subjects as mind-body-spirit medicine, herbal medicine, homeopathy, naturopathy, Oriental medicine, massage therapy, and other associated subject matter. Students who have finished their coursework and met all state licensure and/or certification requirements, may work in a variety of health care settings. Typically, graduates who have earned their Naturopathic Degrees can apply their learned skills in various ways. Some may choose to further their education in a traditional medical school to go beyond earning Naturopathic Degrees. Others may opt to become entrepreneurs in the field and establish their own practices. Naturopathic doctors who have earned their Naturopathic Degrees are also qualified to work in integrative medical clinics, natural pharmacies, and other complementary medicine practices. As with most degree programs, Naturopathic Degrees offer candidates excellent opportunities for knowledge, employment, and continuing education, as well as personal and professional growth. Digital Signage: Hybrid, Interactive Systems Amplify Marketing Impact

By David Little A new trend in digital signage is emerging that combines the strength of digital signs with the interactivity of digital kiosks. For many areas, such as retail shops, the sum of the two holds greater potential for marketers than either of the individual parts. Known in some circles as hybrid digital signs and by others as interactive digital signage, these combo systems can capture the attention of those nearby by playing back compelling linear content -for example an enticing commercial or news feed- and immediately switching to an interactive mode when triggered by an external input, such as the touch of a viewer, the mere presence of a passerby or even environmental conditions. Like a standalone digital sign, a hybrid system allows communicators to playback a pre-built sequence of elements, including video files, graphics, text, animation and live television. Those staples of digital signage are the makings of an effective message that entices interaction with the very flat panel on which the content plays. Once viewers touch the panel or step within its proximity, the hybrid sign automatically interrupts linear content playback and displays a digital kiosk-like interface that lets a shopper touch hot spots on the screen, launching a pre-built interactive branching presentation. Navigating through the presentation, shoppers can find the information they want like product recommendations, pricing and availability. Depending upon the level of sophistication needed, such hybrid interactive presentations can link to company’s servers, pulling information needed for the presentation and collecting information about the consumer that can be stored on the server. For instance, a hybrid system at an automotive retailer could send an inquiry to the store’s server to access a database of recommended filters and oil viscosity specified by each car manufacturer. Matching information the customer entered about his car with the recommendations in the database, the system could check inventory for the right products, retrieve availability and pricing and present the information to the shopper standing at the hybrid sign. Prior to offering that information, the system could ask the shopper to enter his name and address and to grant permission to be notified of future specials. With that data saved on the server, the retailer’s marketing department can automatically send out coupons for oil and filters when next estimated time for an oil change rolls around. What enticed the shopper to touch the screen in the first place? Perhaps it was a video playing back in linear digital signage mode of a favorite racecar driver discussing why it’s important to stay current on oil changes. On the front end of customer interaction, the hybrid system cast a wide net, cycling through a playlist of content designed to sell oil, followed by tires, then batteries, air filters -the list goes on an on. Each linear segment is backed up by an interactive kiosk component that’s triggered when a shopper’s curiosity is piqued by one of these linear presentations and touches the screen. On the back end, the system uses data that’s collected to stay in touch with shoppers once they leave the store, offering special incentives to have them return. In essence, hybrid digital signage can help to extend the marketing reach of a retailer well beyond arm’s length from the display panel and into the homes of shoppers who are willing to interact. Interactivity doesn’t haven’t to begin with a human touch either. Imagine a hybrid digital signage system in a ski shop at the base of mountain. Skiers donning their boots and gloves might see a digital sign in passing as it plays back linear content; however, their attention might be focused when temperature, wind and solar sensors at the top of the mountain report conditions and trigger specific presentations. Lots of sun could call up reminders about needing sun screen. Heavy snow might trigger another presentation that makes them think twice about leaving the store before having the right gloves or goggles. The possibilities for interactive, hybrid digital signage are only as limited as the imagination of creative marketers. To be sure, this aspect of the digital signage market is in its infancy. However, with the recent availability of the hardware and software needed to bring together the separate worlds of kiosks and digital signage, hybrid systems will certainly play an important roll in the unfolding digital signage market. How To Differentiate Between Various Types Of Scholarships

By Andre Alonzo There are various sources of scholarship money awarded to students each year probably more than you realize. The trick in finding these opportunities is understanding each type of scholarship and whether youre eligible for them. While wading through countless resources may seem a daunting task, if youre serious about finding legitimate ways to fund your college education, the task of learning about various opportunities can be well worth it. College Scholarships Many colleges offer monetary awards for their specific college. If you know which schools youd like to attend, it may be to your benefit to find out whether those schools offer school-specific scholarships as part of your financial aid package. Schools that do offer specific scholarships to students of their college typically include requirements the student must maintain in order to remain eligible for the money. For example, many colleges require students receiving scholarship money from them to maintain a certain GPA, pursue a defined course of study, or other specific academic requirements. Not every college offers school-specific scholarship awards however, so its a good idea to do your research beforehand so you wont end up disappointed. Athletic Scholarships These types of scholarships seem to be less talked about than the majority of monetary awards, but that doesnt necessarily make them any less viable. It used to be that students who didnt excel academically, but were amazing when it came to athletics, believed they could fund their college education on an athletic scholarship alone. These days however, thats simply not the case. Its not impossible to receive an athletic scholarship for your hard work on the field, but these scholarship awards are highly competitive. If you excel athletically, its a good idea to research the school or schools youre interested in attending to see if they offer athletic scholarships to promising athletes. Youll also want to look into the process of applying for an athletic scholarship so you know whats involved. Academic Scholarships These awards are often college-specific as well, and are awarded to outstanding students who excel academically. Because they are merit-based, academic scholarships are also highly competitive. While you may have to apply separately for these types of awards, oftentimes an academic scholarship is included with your financial aid package from the school if you show academic excellence in one field or another. Different departments of various colleges may also have specific scholarships available to students pursuing a specific course of study within that department. If you already know what you plan to major in, it would be a good idea to contact the school youre interested in attending and see if they offer scholarships specific to students in your course of study. Private Organizations These organizations are not affiliated with any specific school, and awards from these types range from small monetary awards to $20,000 or more depending on the specific organization. These scholarships require a good deal of research to determine whether the opportunity is legitimate, and may have specific requirements for applying. Various corporations may offer scholarships to students who are interested in pursuing a major within that specific business field. These scholarships may be a bit difficult to find, but they are out there. Check with your parents employers to see if they offer any sort of scholarship program to prospective students. These scholarships often have less competition, so your chances of obtaining funding this way are greater than they would be otherwise. Religious groups oftentimes offer scholarships to students who are involved with the church or specific religious organization. If you belong to a religious group, check to see if they offer monetary awards for people interested in attending college. Not every religious organization offers these awards, but you may be surprised at what you discover. High schools almost always have scholarship opportunities available to students. Check with your guidance counselor and find out which scholarships you may be eligible for. The sooner you begin researching your various scholarship options, the better chances youll have of securing funding for at least a portion of your college education. You may also considering checking with your local Chamber of Commerce for various scholarship opportunities that may be available within your community. Theyll have plenty of information available about the different business that may offer scholarships, and will be able to direct you to the appropriate source for your inquiry. Finally, there are still many other organizations that offer scholarships to students from all walks of life. The other category is where youre apt to find the most opportunities available. Check online at reputable scholarship websites to see if youre eligible for any, and what requirements these groups may have. You never know what you may find once you start researching your various options. Of course, the Military is always an excellent option for students who are interested in receiving scholarship money for college. Of course, Military scholarships require students to perform an active tour of duty, and you MUST be willing and able to comply with the requirements in order to receive your scholarship. Most branches will even pay your entire college tuition, depending on which branch you serve and what youre planning to study. If serving in the Military coincides with your educational goals, you may want to check out which scholarships are available and the requirements for obtaining one. However, be sure that youre going to be able to follow through with the requirements, because once youre in youre in. There are countless ways to help cover the costs of your college education, and various scholarship opportunities await you. All you need to do is put in a bit of time and effort to locate those scholarship opportunities that youre eligible for, and make sure you comply with the requirements exactly. Applying for college is a daunting task, but if you are serious about furthering your education and need help covering the costs, scholarships are a viable way of earning your degree without having to go broke doing it. Health Needs of Survivors of Domestic Violence

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ellen_Taliaferro,_MD] Ellen Taliaferro, MD Domestic violence is not over when the victim is safe and out of harms way. Its not over until justice has been served. Even then, its not over. Its not over until the victim is safe, justice has been served, and the victim is well. Consider these facts: Abuse, especially repetitive abuse, leaves a lasting impression on the health, well-being, and post-abuse functioning of the victim. This impact lingers long after the bruises fade, the bones mend, and the abuse is over. Victims of violence seek healthcare more often than non-victims. The severity of victimization is a powerful predictor of the healthcare costs generated by these victims. Most healthcare visits by victims of domestic violence are not domestic violence patients presenting with injuries, but rather medical problems that seemingly are not related to current or past injuries. The health effects of violence can reach across the life span. Studies have now shown that adults who were abused in childhood vs. those who were not have more: Infectious diseases Mental health disorders Hypertension Diabetes Dermatitis Asthma Allergy Acne Abnormal menstrual bleeding More heath-threatening behaviors such as smoking, the use of alcohol, driving while intoxicated, avoiding regular gynecological examinations, not wearing seat belts, sedentary lifestyle, and high-risk sexual encounters. The abuse sustained in an intimate partner relationship does not have to be physical to cause poor health. Intimate partner violence and abuse (IPVA) can take several forms: physical abuse, verbal abuse, and forced sex. When Dr. Ann Coker and her colleagues looked at domestic violence in a large series of patients, they found that approximately 14% of domestic violence victims have only been victimized psychologically, not physically. These victims had higher rates of numerous medical problems that the non-abused do not have. Among them: Disability that prevented working Arthritis Chronic pain Migraine and other frequent headaches Stammering Sexually transmitted infections Chronic pelvic pain Stomach ulcers Frequent indigestion, diarrhea, or constipation. These findings pose an interesting question: Do victims of psychological abuse have fewer or more health problems than victims of physical violence? Dr. Coker and her colleagues found that psychological IPV was as strongly associated with the majority of adverse health outcomes as was physical IPV. The old childhood taunt of Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me, is wrong, wrong, wrong. And now we have research to support the idea that it’s wrong. Survivors of domestic violence or IPVA will tell you that life after abuse is never the same. Some experience insomnia, multiple aches and pains, problems with concentration, intrusive thoughts, fatigue, and irritability. Any one of these can interfere with effective functioning and set the stage for depression and even despair. Violence and abuse of all forms is complex and the resulting health effects are interwoven. No single approach cures all. Medical help for domestic violence victims and survivors exists but is scattered. Appropriate care is often difficult to find and access, but it can be done. Healthcare providers and survivors must learn to work together to secure the best state of health possible for survivors of domestic violence. My recent book on using expressive writing to help resolve lingering health issues offers one way to give aid to survivors and their supporters. A Guide to Silent Flight

By Bruce Bird Feeling down? Petrol prices, mortgage and credit card payments all going up? Get a lift back up in the air. Get an eco-friendly model sailplane. Sailplanes, also called gliders, fly atop rising air. There is no engine noise, only the sound of your heartbeat as you watch your model sailplane become a speck in the sky. How do you get your model sailplane back? How did you get it up there in the first place? What sort of things can you do with your model sailplane when it is in the air? A model sailplane, just like the real thing, is constantly flying downwards through the air. It must do so to maintain airspeed to provide lift for the wings and airflow over the control surfaces to give the pilot control. But when the air is rising faster than the sailplane is falling then the sailplane can also rise, riding atop the rising air. Rising air occurs either through thermal lift or slope lift. Thermal lift involves heat. Even in the winter months, there are occasions when the ground warms to temperatures higher than the air above. As you know with a hot-air balloon, warm air rises. These pockets of air make perfect elevators for a model sailplane to rise on. But such rising columns of air are invisible. So the art of thermal soaring is to find a strong thermal, and then to stay in it to rise as far as you can. If you are flying ‘point to point’ then to leave that thermal to fly in the direction you want to go while at the same time seeking out your next thermal to lift you up again before the prevailing force of gravity brings your model sailplane inevitably back to earth. Slope lift, by contrast, relies on the wind and a hill. The hill forces the approaching wind upwards, along with your plane. Great slope soaring sites are invariably found where there is a prevailing wind and a long ridge to create a smooth and constant upward wave of air. Without thermal lift or slope lift, a model sailplane will fall inexorably back to earth. The radio controls allow you to guide your plane to seek out lift and if you are flying from point to point, to move from one source of lift to another in the direction you want to go. And eventually, of course, to bring your sky warrior down to a smooth landing. There are several methods of launching a model sailplane for a ride on air. The most basic and obvious method is to simply throw the plane with either a javelin or discus style launch. The plane gains about 50 feet of altitude from the momentum of the throw then you have to hope like crazy that you are going to find lift before gravity brings it inevitably earthward again. This is where slope soaring has a major advantage because as you launch your model sailplane off the slope you know the lift is there from the oncoming breeze. Bungee, or hi-start, launching sends a model sailplane skywards like an arrow. The plane is attached to a line connected to elastic tubing that is secured to the ground, or to a winch. Pull the plane back, let it zoom into the air, and grab the radio control. Better, of course to have two people involved so you have control at all times. Another launch method which emulates full size gliders involves a second powered model airplane to tow the sailplane up and away. This is a nice way of combining a number of modelling and flying disciplines with the towline released by a separate servo actuation. And yes, though some view it as cheating, there are model sailplanes that feature an electric motor for initial launching and for regaining altitude whenever required. The motor has folding propeller blades that fold back when the motor is not running to remove the propeller blades from the airflow where they would otherwise contribute nothing but drag. Though it is quite thrilling to watch your model sailplane soar ever upwards, and to remain there due to your skill in seeking out new thermals, there is still more your model sailplane can show you. Slope soaring off a hill usually involves a constant wind and lift, so flyers are not so concerned about losing altitude in a hurry. So diving from altitude makes for speeds up to 100 mph. Then that competitive edge creeps in again and the slope is where most gliders compete. Racing is either done F3F style where your planes flight is timed, or man-on-man style where you actually race another plane. Sailplane combat, (SSC), is something else again where your objective is to knock your opponent out of the sky and score a kill. Because they obviously crash often, combat sailplanes are made out of foam for easy rebuilds and will literally bounce off the ground due to their forgiving and robust construction. The Academy of Model Aeronautics, (AMA), features several Special Interest Groups to assist the silent flier. The League of Silent Flight (LSF) provides rules for racing, aerobatics, and a series of thermal tasks. The RCCA offers combat guidance and events. The NEAC offers guidance for electric-powered sailplanes. (LSF) League of Silent Flight: http://www.silentflight.org (RCCA) Radio Control Combat Association, http://www.rccombat.com (NEAC) National Electric Aircraft Council, http://www.electricaircraft.org So there you have it, beautiful, elegant, thermal soaring model sailplanes or robust, knock ‘em down combat kills with cheap, quick to build foamies. Model sailplane soaring is just as exciting as powered flight. So get yourself a model sailplane and get out there and give it a go. Bruce Bird makes it easy for the beginner to quickly grasp the broad range of exciting activities that make up airplane modeling. Network Now

By Helena Bouchez Have you ever been to a networking event that was awkward, frustrating and nothing more than a business card exchange? In his book MANHATTAN SOCIETY: The Art & Spirituality of Networking, Chris London says “Networking with integrity creates a greater willingness of all parties to be part of a human conduit to serve as energy and resource to one another. Sometimes you will give more than you receive and sometimes you will get back more than you give. Its not about keeping score.” Networking is about giving first. To make the most of networking events, approach them like you would a cocktail party. Go with the intention of being social and making friends. In her book How to Work a Room (Quill, 2000) Susan Roane uses something she calls the Ro Ane Mingling Mantra: Small talk, small talk, small talk. Even if I have an agenda, nobody gives a flying fig about it. People care about having a connected conversation the focus of networking is connections with peoplenot what they can buy from us. Once you meet people you like, think of ways to help them. This does two things; identifies you as a person who adds value and gives you instant credibility, especially if you dont know the contact well. Here are five ways to help your contacts: If the contact is a vendor, and you know someone who can use their services, give them an introduction. Send your contacts journal articles you think they would find useful. If you receive free tickets to concerts, conventions or sporting events, instead of using them yourself, offer them to a contact. Go the extra mile. I once volunteered to set up a partners home computer. He eventually left the company, but we stayed in touch. When I let him know I needed a new position he made a phone call on my behalf that resulted in an interview. Ask what your contacts biggest challenge is. Then do a little research on the topic and send them the results. Networking by giving changes the dynamic of almost all future interactions. Laid off recently, I called everyone I knew to let them know I was in need of a new position. The response was nearly one hundred percent positive and has netted me three interviews so far! Inventory who you know, make a consistent effort to meet new people and dont forget to find ways to help them.
